It’s that time of the week again for Weekend Writing Warriors, a time when writers share a snippet of their work for the comments and critique by other writers. When you have read my piece, I hope you will follow the link (www.wewriwa.com) to read other posts.
This will be my last snippet from A Love More Precious Than Diamonds. Dan went with Vicky when she challenged her mother over her damaged childhood, and she asks him to drive her back to her place in Brooklyn, rather than his apartment.
When we reached Brooklyn, I stopped outside Vicky’s apartment block and got out of the vehicle, intending to see her right to the door, but she held up her hand.
“No, it’s okay, Dan. I’ll be all right now. I need to be on my own for a while. I don’t know if things will ever be good for us again or not. I might take your advice and get some therapy. In the meantime, I think that the best therapy for me would be to get back to my dissertation. Please understand that I still care for you, but I just can’t be with you right now.”
I understood completely, but it broke my heart to see her pick up her bag and walk alone into the building, and all I wanted to do was to grab her and hug her and tell her that I loved her. For I had realized, just in the last couple of days, that I loved this woman, and now it looked as though I might lose her.
The book leaves their joint story at this point, and takes up Vicky’s story, from her childhood in Brooklyn with her grandparents, to her once again living with her mother and her new partner, when she is a teenager, before finally coming back to the present, when the reader will discover whether her relationship with Dan has survived her period of absence from him.
I’m pleased to tell you that my latest book, The Russian Bride, has just been accepted for publication by Blushing Books. However I have decided that it is too raunchy to publish here under the weekend writing warriors banner, as so many other writers write other genres and might be offended by it, so next week I plan to start another book I wrote about twelve years ago, and which I am thinking of updating and republishing. More on that next week.
A Love More Precious Than Diamonds is available from Amazon and Blushing Books
Too raunchy for WeWriWa? Sounds interesting. Congratulations on the contract!

Thanks, Ed. It’s all your collective faults. When I was posting for faceless strangers it didn’t bother me what people thought. But now that I know you all, it feel as though I am telling the story to my mother or my disapproving older sister, and it has made me shy! I will think about it, and maybe post some of the ‘respectable’ bits.

Hey! I’m neither you’re mother nor your sister!

Thanks, Jessica. Yes it seems as though all is lost, but (a secret here) I do like happy endings!

Congratulations on new contract. Sa snippet and sad place to leave us hanging. Tweeted.

Thanks, Daryl. It was an obvious break, but not very satisfactory for you. I do, however, like happy endings, so read into that what you will.

And . . . she walks away. A very satisfying, unsatisfied ending. Too raunchy? Is there such a thing when it’s well written?

Thanks for the compliment, Nancy. It means a lot when it comes from a fellow writer. It seems like the end, but in actual fact I finished only half way through the book. I switch to Vicky’s story, of her life with Therese (Gem) as a mother, and then I return to the joint story of Dan and her. And I do like happy endings, is all I will say!

I think it was wise of her to be self protective for now and dive into the dissertation. Congratulations on the new book contract!

Thanks, Veronica. The story continues from this point by going back and telling Vicky’s story. Some readers didn’t like that I stopped Dan’s story (temporarily) and went back 15 years, before returning to the present. I just felt that jumping back and forth over such a wide age gap would be confusing, so split the story into two sections. It also kept the readers in suspense until nearly the end of the book, before they find out whether Vicky and Dan can forget the past and start afresh. As I’m an optimist I’m sure you can guess which way I went.

First, great snippet! I really don’t see how their relationship can survive. Second, congrats on the new book! But too raunchy? You have to share! Hehehe, I’m definitely curious!

Thanks Elyzabeth. Yes, it’s difficult to see how their relationship can survive, so I’m afraid that you would have to buy the book to find out. (Sorry, I’m very cruel, aren’t I?) Re my new book, I will have a think about whether I can share some of the less salacious parts. I can’t be held responsible for corrupting all the good people of Wewriwa. Will let you all know.

I’m glad she’s taking some time for herself. What a predicament.

Are you sure The Russian Bride is too raunchy? It can’t all be raunchy, can it?

I am re-thinking my decision. No, it’s not all raunchy, so I might be able to pick out some less spicy bits for Wewriwa. Tune in next week to find out.

This is a bit sad, but also hopeful. It sounds like she’s choosing the healthy way for herself, which might end up benefitting the relationship too.

Yes, I think she is. The next part of the book tells Vicky’s story, about what it was like growing up with a mother like Gem, before it returns to the present, and we see if there is any future for the couple.

Congrats on the new contract. I agree that the ending is a little sad.

Thanks, Elaine. Where I ended, wasn’t the end of the story. It goes on for much longer and has a very happy ending. I’m a sucker for happy endings.

Thanks Amy. It isn’t the end of the story. The book goes on to tell Vicky’s story, before it returns to their joint story, so still time for a happy ending.

Sometimes you have to walk away and mend yourself before you can be with someone else. And yes, there is more between them…
